Hello to All.

I am looking at a 6 HP Evinrude tonight as a possible purchase. The seller didn't know the model number but new it was an "old" engine. ( if he thinks it's old, wait till he sees me! ) I'm thinking somewhere from 1966 thru 1979. Did they all use a 50/1 mix or were the earlier ones 24/1? Thanks in advance. Rick.

Well I'm surprised. I've read LeeRoy's articles many times (9.9&15) but never remembered he wrote about the 6HP. Thanks so much. 50/1 for them all was the answer. Rick.

Re: Evinrude 6 HP series fuel mix

He uses 100/1 for trolling his 9.9's also. Still, he is a guy who knows the motors well enough to feel confident in such maneuvers. I'm a bit too cowardly myself. Anyway I did but the motor and wouldn't you know it, it's missing the id plate. On the welsh plug it says- C569041. Can anyone make anything of this number? I will try (first attempt) to post pictures at some point but I'm not much good at this technology stuff. But a picture is worth a thousand words for sure. Rick.

LeeRoy is a very knowledgeable guy and writes well, but sometimes gives what I think is bad advice. I think all of the 'Rude 6s use 50:1. That is 50:1. That is what the people who designed them advise and that is what I advise.

Some of you are taking this mix that I write out of context. You will notice that off my website the following ----- Fuel/oil mix on all the OMC motors that have needle roller bearings (this 6hp motor included) is 50-1 of TCW-3 standard outboard oil. However I have found that since I troll much of the time, other than getting there & back, I like to use a mix of 75-1 but of a SYNTHETIC blend oil instead of the standard oil. This gives me at least the same or better motor lubrication, plus it gives me less smoke at a troll & the spark plugs last longer before fouling.

Yes, I experimented with 100-1 and have had no problems on a 9.9 for over 5 years, but have now finalized to 75-1 SYNTHETIC blend oil. We have way better oils now than was available 40 years ago. Why not utilize their benefits?

I would never run less than 50:1 mix on any 2 stroke motor. Oil is the cheapest thing you'll ever put in a motor.

1) being it cost less than the gasoline and

2) it reduces premature wear on a motor, therefore pro-longing it's life and preventing sooner (than later) rebuilds.

To help a motor run better at trolling speeds, just set your spark plug gap out to .040.

Yeah, I agree oils are much better in this day and age, which is why you can run your motors at the advised ratio without fouling plugs. Not lean out the mixture. I cannot even remember the last time I fouled a plug??

Lets preserve the remaining antiques that we all love so that our grandkids, and their grandkids can enjoy them as we do. Powerheads are not going to last forever.
