I recently bought this motor and have it on a 13 foot narrow jon boat. Last trip out the motor would bog down severely and it was consuming a lot of gas. Changed plugs and found a rubber tube that goes from the bottom of the block to the top of the block cracked. I taped over the holes and sealed them because I cant figure out how to remove it without destroying it. Put motor in trash can full of water and it revs and runs a lot smoother. Wondering what that hose is and how to replace it. Also it has a lean/rich knob on the front. what is the proper way to set this adjustment? Thanks.

I will ask a really "dumb" question. How old is your fuel? If it is older than a couple of months, dump it, it is stale.
How do the spark plugs look when removed. If they are wet and sooty looking, you have weak ignition. I would make sure this motor is running on both cylinders. Little motors are hard to tell because they are so smooth even on one cylinder. Cheap insurance is an ignition tune up kit and fresh plugs. If the breaker points have a little corrosion on them, they will still produce a spark, but it could be weak enough it will not ignite all of the atomized fuel/air in the cylinder causing it to run rough and use alot of fuel.
Definatly replace the hose you spoke about.
Hope I can help, best of luck!!

The Hose looks to be an air line, it has brass crimps holding it on some fittings. Might be a vacuum line. Have fresh gas and motor seems to be running well after I changed the plugs. Old plugs were brownish. Ignition parts look new, so I figure they are ok. Really need some help with this rich/lean setting. How far should this needle be in? It seems to have no effect on the performance of the engine at all. I'm thinking that this is misadjusted and possibly fouling the plugs. Any ideas would help. Thanks for the replys.

those are airlines I figured yes the brass connection will break take a knife and slit them way back and then remove the new ones could use a little oil maybe then they will slide right on where is your lean rich set at now Im not sure of correct setting but you can experiment with it turn it more or less from where it is now sooner or later you get it right

Your carb setting should be around 1 1/4 turn out from all the way in.This can vary either way 1/2 a turn.

Your motor problems sound to me like you have a carb problem. Maybe try taking the carb off and disassemble it. Look for loose brass fittings in the bowl of a torn gasket somewhere. It does not sound like you have a lean condition so I would bet the carb is NOT plugged. It sounds like a way rich condition, resembles a high speed jet missing or loose, or a torn/rotted gasket letting too much fuel digest.
Also while your carb is off, check your float level. Turn the throttle body upside down with the float and needle in place. The float should run level, parralel with the body of the carb. Your float level could be too high letting too much fuel flow.
Not trying to confuse you, just tryiong to cover all the bases.
Good luck!!

Re: Evinrude 6 horse Fisherman

Guy' thanks for all the replys. Just got back from the river and she is running like a champ. Replaced that airline and the plugs. Ajusted the lean rich to where it just starts to sputter and back about a quarter turn. Runs great! Have a Trifinder with speedometer on and this little motor is pushing me 20mph. Prior to the repairs, best I would go is 12mph. Thans for all the ideas and help. Take care. :p :p

The hose from bottom to top is a reciculating tube that collects fuel/oil from the bottom of the crankcase and pumps it up to the upper main bearing. The replacement hose should be fuel proof...
- Scott
