I have a 5hp angler , to test the water pump how deep do you have to submerge it in water & where will the water exit. I see a group of 8 small holes about 1/2 way up from the prop. What are these holes for?

Thanks,

does anyone know how far you have to submerge the lower unit for the water pump to work on a 65 evinrude 5hp angler?

The deeper the better. You have to at least have the leg underwater to the top of the pump. You should see a mist of water coming out the holes you mentioned. Best of luck. Rick.

Does it matter if those exhaust holes are submerged?

Re: evinrude 5hp angler water discharge

The Angler was built in the mid-late 1960s as an amalgamation of the 4hp and 6hp models. It had the 6hp powerhead (detuned slightly with tighter reed stops) on the direct drive 3/4hp lower (more or less).

To answer the question, no the exhaust relief holes do not need to be submerged, and really shouldn't be. Water level should be a couple inches above the bulge where the exhaust housing meets the gearcase housing as the pump is not self-priming. Most of the water and exhaust go out the outlet above the propeller, but some will exit the relief holes as a fine mist...

So, if this mist is occuring, the impeller is working? Use to seeing a flow of water after it has run through the head to cool the motor if the impeller is working. Final question is where do you find this impeller for such an old motor and is there any help on here for where it even is.

Hi NG. As long as you're getting a nice strong mist you should be ok. It will probably improve once you're on an body of open water, rather than using a relatively small test tank. You can get your new impeller tight here at iboats. Here's a vid of your motor running well in a test tank. These old vintage motors spit out more of a mist rather than a solid tell tale, or "pee stream" like you often see on modern motors.
