I am considering buying a used boat and motor. I am looking at one which has an Evinrude 50HP Starflite outboard. Model # is 50519. I believe it was manufactired in 1959. This motor has been in storage since 1985. What should I be looking for as far as major problems would be concerned. Also, if anyone has had any comments about this motor, I would appreciate hearing about it.

Thank you

------------------
Al Baris
Clyde, NY

Hi albaris,
Unless your lookig to do some collecting I find something else. 12 gal/hr fuel consumption. Vintage motor these days. You can still get a lot of parts, but some you have to search out.

...corm...

Corm,

Thanks very much for the info. I did hear from someone else that it was a gas guzzler. My other choice is a 1975 Johnson 135HP. Do you know anything about these engines??

Thanks again,

Al Baris

Re: Evinrude 50HP Starflite

Corm's right about those old V4 50's. Its amazing how much fuel they will pull for a 50hp outboard. Back then at 25 cent a gallon no one cared and it was the best low end water ski engine around.

The 75-76 135 V4 was the most powerful crossflow V4 OMC ever made. They put out more power at the prop than the later 140's did. It was also the first years they got away from 300.00+ battery CD ignitions and went to a straight power pac(about 100 bucks) If the engine is clean and the gearcase in good shape, she should be showing 130lb of compression I'd go for it. I ran a 76 85hp for over 3000hr on a Whaler and the only problems I had it would eat a power pac every two years like clock work.

Dunk,
Thanks very much for the info on this motor. I did end up buying it, and it seems to be in good shape. However, I have not put it in the water yet....so time will tell.

Thanks again

Al Baris
