hi all,i am a newcomer to boating, boat outboards and now to this forum.Have just purchased a used Evinrude 4 hp outboard motor as a auxiliary spare and I am getting conflicting advice as to whether its a 2 or 4 stroke.Of course I need to be sure before I try to test run the engine, the model no is BE4BRHLCEC and the serial no is B 1926404,searching this forum tells me its a 1989 longshaft,I cannot easily identify any oil level, fill, drain plug nuts or bolts on the motor and my limited knowledge and instinct is telling me its a 2 stroke, can anyone tell me exactly what it is,or an absolute indication of what to find on the motor so I can see for myself.

Likely a 2 stroke.-----Is there something that looks like a belt to drive a camshaft ?------Is there something that looks like a valve cover ?-----Is there a dip stick ?----Is there a place to add oil on the motor ?-----Is there a place to drain the oil ?----A picture of the engine block would identify it in about 2 seconds !!----------But as far as i know they did not offer a 4 stroke in 89 model year.

That one is definitely a 2 stroke.and it requires 50:1 fuel mix.
Yes its an an '89 long shaft model, made in Belgium

4 stroke 4hp models are not listed until 2003 and were only badged as Johnsons. They are identified by a "4" in the model number immediately before the date letters, apart from all the visual clues.such as an oil filler cap

I think your engine is a genuine Evinrude. The 4 strokes were rebadged Suzukis.
