Hi, I have an Evinrude 1987 model BE4RCUD,4hp-2 cylinder-2 cycle, which is reluctant to idle. My handbook tells me to unscrew from closed, the slow speed needle valve, 3/4 turns, is this three quarters of a turn or three to four turns, (I assume the latter, as it should read turn, not turns for quarters.) or any other ideas please? Regards, Al.

It is 3/4ths of a turn. In my experience, open it one full turn and then adjust inwards from there while the motor is running...
- Scott

When adjusting give the motor a few minutes to settle in.
Someone made a good post about adjusting low speed on small outboards a few months ago.
Give it a search. Either in J & E or outboards.

... and don't adjust from cold. Get the motor warmed up first, then adjust. As has been said, wait 15/20 seconds after each adjustment to allow motor to respond and stabilise. That's assuming you've already checked and OK'd other obvious slow-running hiccups, like plug condition and gap, crud in the fuel filter, last seasons stale fuel, water in mix (fuel is hygroscopic - it absorbs water over time, which then separates out in low spots in fuel lines), etc.
