I know condition is everything. But would you think about this swap?
I have a chance to pick up a mid/late '90s Evinrude 48spl for a few hundred more than it is going to cost to get the rare parts to fix my '86 Japan built Mariner 40 HP. The Mariner runs strong but needs a new water pump, thermostat, and associated gaskets and seals. Since the 2-cyl, twin carb oil injected model is not supported by after market parts they cost a lot (~$300 in parts) and I have to get the lower unit bolts extracted at a machine shop.
My underestanding was that the 48spl was a pretty well built outboard. Any thoughts? Or, am I getting into the same position with parts/repairs.
fwiw- the boat is a 15' Mckee (whaler-like) and rated to 70 hp.
