I know condition is everything. But would you think about this swap?

I have a chance to pick up a mid/late '90s Evinrude 48spl for a few hundred more than it is going to cost to get the rare parts to fix my '86 Japan built Mariner 40 HP. The Mariner runs strong but needs a new water pump, thermostat, and associated gaskets and seals. Since the 2-cyl, twin carb oil injected model is not supported by after market parts they cost a lot (~$300 in parts) and I have to get the lower unit bolts extracted at a machine shop.

My underestanding was that the 48spl was a pretty well built outboard. Any thoughts? Or, am I getting into the same position with parts/repairs.

fwiw- the boat is a 15' Mckee (whaler-like) and rated to 70 hp.

The 48spl is a great motor and the parts are readily availiable but you might have to change the controls as well

yeah, the controls are included. I might buy the Mariner parts and the other motor too (wife might kill me too). With my luck, as soon as I sell one, the other would break.

Dang, I'm swamped and can't go check it out and it's the wife's birthday this weekend and mother's day next so timing is not looking too good.

I was wrenching on the 40 late last night and still don't have it off the transom quite yet. Nothing like 20 year old corroded bolts. The parts place also hasn't responded about having all the water pump and thermostat parts I need. Status only says most of the parts, but that won't cut it (lower pump base and thermostat are bad).

Now, I am even contemplating a NEW 50 HP Yamaha 2-smoke repower, seems like the best bang for the buck but it's still a bit more than I wanted to spend.

I have a 15' A-Craft flat bottom with center console. And pushing it is nothing less than a 1989 Evinrude 48 SPL. Great motor and nothing but good reviews on it too. Carbs were easy to break down and clean and is just a great motor. Go with the rude.
