i read were these give lots of trouble, but i dont know if i want to spend 600$ on a power trim. what else can be done. we bought a cable thinking it was that, (it locked down and wont release and cant get it up.) we took lift assist cylinder off and its siezed up in the cylinder or something cant move valve were cable attaches. from what i understand its about 450$ for a new cylinder and then u mise well go with a power trim but i just bought boat and dont want to spend the money on a power trim yet. wanna see how well boat preformes (had it out 2 times and it works good until this trim problem) Any ideas? thanks

Not any real good solutions from what I've seen. All of these original tilt assist units are now breaking or soon to be broken. If they are frozen, then the motor is locked down. If the cylinder is drilled out (not recommended....), then there is no reverse lock and the motor will rise up in reverse. Not a biggee for me personally, but it would be for 90% of the boaters out there.

yea, well we had it lock down once when we first got it and we messed with the cable and the valve and got it to release, then we just left it and i noticed that the motor would rise up in reverse, no big deal as if you just idle in reverse it didnt really do it. but we thought we had it fixed and used the lock, it worked 2 times then locked up. so we were thinking of drilling a hole in it or something. at first we though we jus put a pin in place of it but got to thinking that the cylinder is like a stop and dont let the motor go so far so next thing would be to some how release the cylinder. were gonna try and mess with the valve some more (we have cylinder off) and see if we can get it to work and release and then somehow just lock that valve up so it cant lock and just use it that way for now and maybe in a year if boat turns out good well put a power trim on it. but if we need to drill to release, any suggestions on were to drill? thanks

There can be extreme pressure in the tilt cylinder assembly and drilling it can be really bad for your physical appearance and eyesight.
That said, I don't know where the guys that have done this have drilled it.

we got it to work, i thought i just say how. problem with cylinder was in the valve. it was sticky. for some reason it wouldnt move until we removed that plug on the side next to the valve and pulled ram out as far as we could. some oil came out and then the valve moved. we pulled up on it (opening valve) and pushed ram in a bunch more oil came out, and worked it back and forth a bit. we then put plug back in. the valve was working and it worked without oil in the cylinder. you pull up on valve and it would release let go and it would lock it. i dont know why but it seemed to work better without the oil. but our valve would get stuck up and you could have to tap it so spring would pull it down or it would get kinda stuck down and need a little help from a screw driver to open. so i just screwed off the end nut were the cable hooks too, got some washers and shimmed it up then tightened the nut so it would hold valve open. now cylinder is free float all the time. we rigged up a little i hook and a small chain on back for the reverse lock. all works great.
