Hello all.
I am working on a Evinrude 40hp WorkTwin, year unknown. The "year unknown" is my first set of problems. I have searched this motor top to bottom and can find no serial/model etc. I have searched the web for hours and found NO MENTION of a 40hp WorkTwin motor, so I have no clue what span of years these were made... other than the motor cowl looks like the same style/age as the one on my 1976 35hp Johnson.

Any help or clues as to when these were made would be helpful as I cannot really start repairs w/o getting the correct manual.

Thanks for your help.

Is there a welch plug on the powerhead? A little silver disk somewhere between the size of a nickel and a quarter. That should have a number on it.

It is a 1983 Commercial motor.

There are parts books at "http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E" Don't use the quotation marks. They show 4 model numbers, 2 regular and 2 commercial, I'm not smart enough to figure out which one is yours.

Re: Evinrude 40hp WorkTwin

Thanks IWombat & FR, your help is appreciated.

I did some more close analysis of the 40HP WorkTwin and the only numbers I can come up with are the numbers on the cylinder head cover (318963). I found that part number on another site and it led me to believe that the motor would be between 1974 - 1976, but I can find no reference to tell me which of the many models produced in those years might be the WorkTwin. Just not much info out here on the old commercial OB's.

FR... the photos in the Commercial Ad are certainly mirror images of the cowling and also the lower unit looks the same as mine. Is it possible that Evinrude would have the same decal scheme on say a 1974 as they would on a 1983?

Thanks for your help.

Naw. Why don't you believe it is a '83? That powerhead was used for a lot of years and you will find that the numbers for castings such as you describe will also be found on many years and models. Casting numbers do not necessarily match the finished part number. If they drill another hole in it for a hose clamp, the finished part number changes even though the casting number is the same. If you look hard enough, you will find parts that date way back into the 1960's. In fact, the whole dad-gum motor except for the hood is the same basic thing sold as a Gale in the early '60's. That's not to say there were not modifications and improvements made along the way.

If it isn't complicated enough, the "commercial" motors are often older models without the current up to date frills.

Re: Evinrude 40hp WorkTwin

Hi Guys - from here in sunny England. I have had similar problems identifying this same engine that I need parts for.
The thread titled "40 HP Evinrude WorkTwin YR??." on this forum has a couple of photos of an engine identical to mine. This is a great forum for amateurs like myself to get info.
I have been told conflicting model id's one told me mine is a 1966 model and another that mine is a 1976 "Noreseman" even though the cowl is identical to the one in the photos on above thread?? now I am even more confused!
I need a recoil starter assy that fits and possibly other parts at some point. anyone got a cheap one willing to ship to UK please let me know. I can email photos etc to anyone who can help. (Model 406B64R serial No B 4202)
thanks Craig
