You may have to remove the starter to expose the linkage below.
Not that easy to kill engine.
>Either trace black/yellow wire to main plug (then ground it carefully)
or
>unplug tank

good luck! :)

Schematic thanks for your reply .

Do i get it right - shifting rod is disassembled all the way up under hood ?

I cant see any y/b wire leaving power pack, although pack seems to be the same type as my old 35Hp.

I always enjoy your good replies, thanks.

Re: Evinrude 40 lower unit

The shift rod is connected to a linkage just under the bottom of the starter. If you remove the starter and manually move the shifter, you'll see how it activates. The shifter rod is long (from engine to LU)and will come out with the LU. Don't even attempt to remove LU until you're sure the rod has been disconnected from the top pivot. Some have a spring pin and some have a screw you must remove to allow you to slide the rod off....

Re: Evinrude 40 lower unit

I found it now - it is besides gas linkage, starter is on the other side. I will get a 55 HP 1985 motor same type from one of my friends this week. It has blown head (crankshaft, rod and housing) I will save it for parts, as gear is OK- do you know if gear ratio the same ? By the way, i got rid of the used black fat gearoil today - There WERE shavings in it - lots of small, but maybe this oil was in it from new. The gear seems to function OK - i feel no unnormal play in bearings -- shift seems OK.

Will swapping carbs with the ones from the 55 increase power ?

Ahhh, the starter has been relocated to fit VRO. Sorry about that....I assumed 85-86 was the same.

Thanks for the help.

Do you know about the 40/55 difference.

I have all parts from the 55 and my powerhead is in very good condition.

Schematic you WERE right.

The shift goes from the gear linkage on motors right side by an axle to the mid front of the motor, just below starter. Starter is still at left side behind VRO pump. It is an 88 model. Thanks
