Evinrude 40 hp shift rod seal replacement

Need to replace the shift rod seal on my 1962 40 hp. The manual says to use a special tapered punch to drive out the shift bushing. I do not have their special punch. It there another way to do it? Thanks

Nobody has the special punch anymore. Someone wrote something about a substitute for this. Search for shift rod seal, or lower end seal and you'll probably find the thread.<br /><br />I'm afraid I can't remember what was said.

5/16 threaded rod will replace the punch. A tapered punch will not work on some lower units, despite seloc's claims. Generously heating the housing set them free.
