1st time poster here and I need some help from you guys bad. My motor trims down when i go faster then about 25% throttle. The motor is a E40ELCD and I bought the boat used. I will attach a picture of the tilt/trim setup. Please let me know what I need to do. It does tilt/trim without issues but when I get it in the water and throttle up it just trims all the way down. Makes it hard to get on plane without sitting on the front of the boat. Thanks for the help!

Here is a picture of the Tilt/Trim setup:

I think that system is only rated for tilt. the safety valves on most small prestolite pistons (approx 1/2" dia x 6" stroke) pop open around 10HP.

Just as I was thinking about it. I have tilted the motor all the way up out of the water at night and then when I come down 2 hours later it is all the way down already. Wouldn't that be a leak? Or is that just not strong enough to hold the motor up?

The original parts list shows a Prestolite upright pump motor on the tilt/trim unit. Based on that I will guess that what you have is an after market trim only.

My 85 - 90 hp has a tilt only unit but with the upright Prestolite pump motor.

On the dash, it does have a switch for it that says "OMC accessories" above that it says "Power Tilt" wit ha up and down on the switch. I assume that this is only a tilt assist then correct?

You have an internal leak. if your release valve is tight and not broken, your pump seals may be bad and allowing the motor to leak down. I just purchased the seal kit for my johnson 40 (about $75) and rebuilt my unit. Not hard at all once you get the proper pin wrench to get the top of the cylinder off. Also, if you go this route and can't get the top pin out that holds the piston to the motor, you can disamble the unit with the piston still attached. Just my .02 - other's here are much more experienced. Here's what RRitt told me:

"if your trim unit goes up and holds without bleeding down then your internal pump seals are fine.
If your system does not leak or seep oil from the shaft seal then your piston seals are okay.
When either of these two conditions arise, then it is time for hydraulic rebuild. Otherwise, you're good."

Seeing your photo, you have the exact same tilt only pump I have on my 55 HP Johnson, that will not trim under power. As far as it leaking down on you, your motor toter will keep the motor tilted up for when trailering and I wouldn't worry about spending the money on replacing the pump as long as it still tilts fine. Try bumping your rod up to the next notch, I run mine 2nd from the bottom hole.
