WHEN I REV IT IN REVERSE, THE MOTOR KICKS UP BECAUSE THE LOCK-DOWN IS NOT ENGAGING. THE MOTOR IS ON A SAILBOAT AND I CAN'T SEE UNDER IT TO SEE WHAT IS FAILING TO LATCH. ANY IDEAS?
There should be a lever in the front of the engine, near the clamp downs. It's connected to a catch that locks onto a rod, located between the leg and the transom mount.
Howdy.

Like Schaffer said.

There should be a link from the gearshift if you have one, that locks the engine in reverse only. If it was locked all of the time, the first rock you hit would take your transom off.

Look for the reverse lock link. It may be missing, broken or simply misadjusted.

Good luck.
