Re: Evinrude 35hp Big twin

Yeah Im going to pull the L/U and then the powerhead. I think my best bet is too pull the exhaust plate so that I can see how the rings/cylinders look, then I want to possibly pull the cylinder head and try and heat/deepcreep the pistons in an attempt to free up this old boy. From what I can tell, the motor looks pretty well taken care of, with little use. My guess is either this thing froze up a long time ago, and someone pulled the carb to put on a different motor, or they pulled the carb to do maintenance, and just never got back around to reinstalling it. The starter and air box that are necessary to remove to get to the carb were sold to me with the motor, so I am very curious to see what this guys insides look like. The fact that there was oil in the cylinders gives me a hint of faith.....

It looks like paint is missing, but actually that is grime that I have yet to remove.

Okay, so I have good news and bad news. I pulled the L/U and it came right off, no issues whatsoever. I shifted into FNR and shaft spun accordingly. YAY! But.... here is the strange thing. The exhaust was PACKED with rodent debris. This motor must have not been ran in YEARS! I am pretty sure that when I pull the exhaust plate up top it too will be packed with rodent nesting material. I guess Ill see when I see.

Nice looking motor. I fired mine up after my last post and it ran nice. Your motor looks darned near as nice as mine. I think it'll will come back to life pretty easily. For a carb, I can help you out with that. I have a spare. Just make me an offer. I have other stuff too.

I would re-seal the lower unit and put a new impeller in, plus refurbish the entire ignition system. These old Big Twins are tough and very forgiving. Reviving them, is commonly an easy venture.

Again....great find.

Re: Evinrude 35hp Big twin

So here is an update. Good news and bad. Had a hard time pulling the powerhead, so Im letting some PB soak the exhaust mani bolts that did not want to budge. Have some pics. There was a lot of debris inside the cyllinders. Piston crowns look good. I am thinking that oe of the P.O.s of the motor let the motor set without spark plugs in for a while. I dont have any other explaination of what all of this debris is. Once I pull the powerhead I will pull the exhaust plate and check out the lower ends of the pistons. Pistons cleaned up pretty nicely, as well as the cylinder walls. I guess the good news is that it does not appear that this motor locked up due to an overheat or a blow up.

I'll get some pics of the cleaned up cylinder walls when I get a chance. They look good. But this is looking more and more like a hone/ring job.

That would be puting it Politely. Split the crankcase and see what the crank looks like.

Sure will, as soon as I get the powerhead off. Have you ever seen this type of debris in an older motor? What do you think it is?

That powerhead will need a complete rebuild. I can guarantee that if you split the crankcase it will look equally ugly. Might get it going, but will only be a matter of time before she self destructs.

The reason that you found the motor in the condition that it was in, is because it WAS a parts motor. It seized up. someone put oil in the cylinders to try to free it up, failed, then started pulling parts off for other motors, seen it a thousand times.

I bring them back to life myself, but be forewarned, you will spend much more doing it than it is worth. I do it because I love them, I have no intention of profitting. A much cheaper solution would be to buy a good used powerhead and simply swap it. Unless you love to tinker, then of course you will be doing a rebuild.

Whatever you decide let us know.

That motor brings back memories. My dads first boat had a 57 electric start Big Twin. I remember being at the lake in 72 pulling the gearcase apart to flip the clutch dog around. I wish we had take some pictures of it. It looked real impressive when I was a child

Yup, I knew this was a possibility seeing as the carb was gone. I'm pretty sure I am going to part the rest of it out. I have neither the time, nor money to do this right now. Although it would be nice to bring back a vintage motor to life. I only have $35 into it, so Im sure I can sell just the L/U for quite a bit more than that. I have working motors from '67 up through '81, and I like to consider myself more of a fisherman than a marine mechanic. Rather spend my time out on the water. :)

But dont get me wrong, when I encounter motor problems, I spend all my time in the garage. :)

Re: Evinrude 35hp Big twin

Okay, so here's an update. Got the powerhead off, but put a little crack in the midsection. Not a biggie, but still sucks. The crank bearings look great. As a matter of fact, I dont see where this guy could even be seized at. There are no scores in the cylinders, and the rings look good. There are no metal chunks in the crankcase.

However, there was some sand on the reed plates, and some in the crank case, although it does not appear to have made its way into the cylinders. Here are some pics.
