Evinrude 35 problem

Got a 1977 Evinrude 35HP electric start w/remote on a recent old boat purchase.
Rebuilt the starter to get it working. Removed and cleaned the carb and reed valve.
Good spark on new plugs and fuel is getting to spark plugs. Compression is 90 in top
cyl and only 58 in bottom cyl. When trying to start only get occasional pop through
the exhaust. Does this sound like rings? (cyl's have been oiled). Because of the
age I'm considering just buying a new 4-stroke. Your thoughts ? Thanks.

Nick...how long has the rig set? Might try to decarb and try to get the compression up on the offending cylinder. Compression on each cylinder should be with in 10% of each other. Get them all up to 90psi and you should be in good shape.

OBJim

Re: Evinrude 35 problem

Hi, Nick.

Have you checked the timing? With the things you have checked out, the engine should start, even on one cylinder.

I have more than once bought an engine cheap only to find that it wouldn't start due to the flywheel key shearing and allowing the flywheel to shift.

If that is okay, try draining your carbs and then spraying fuel into the carb while turning her over. If she makes a good effort to start and run, you have a fuel supply problem. Maybe flooding, maybe too lean.

Your chances are good that a thorough decarb will restore compression in the bottom cylinder.

Good luck. :)

Re: Evinrude 35 problem

Thanks all for the input. Plug wires not crossed, wire length from the two coils almost makes
that impossible. Rig only sat for about a year. Really had my hopes up on the timing.
Pulled the flywheel hoping to find a sheared key but no - everything looks good. Think
I'll pull the head and exhaust covers and have a look see. - Nick

NickHar

I think I didnt express myself right. If someone worked on it, its possible to swap the coils on motor as the wires from power pack have same length. I tried that assemblying a motor someone else took apart. Was it running well before it sat ? Did some else than you work on it ? Try to swap ignition cords if they can reach.
