Hi all.

My 1983 50 hp Johnson has a default piston so i bought a other engine while i will recover my Johnson. The engine i bought was a Evinrude 35hp -1959 that comes from the Swedish navy, it has been used for about 10 hours since new and looks like new under the hood. The question is, is this a good engine to use for weekends and holidays or should i put it back in the crate and let a collector have it?

Re: Evinrude 35 hp -1959

WOW! Beautiful engine in great shape. I have the same engine (1957) in a Lark model with electric start and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Very dependable motors - mine has never stranded me. A few things I would do before firing her up:
1. Remove the recoil starter and look under the inspection port in the flywheel. Check condition of coils (should have no cracks) and clean the points and set them to .020" if necessary.
2. Replace the old fuel lines with new alcohol resistant lines.
3. Replace the impeller.
4. Change the gearcase lube.

You may want to check compression. Should be 110+ psi on both cylinders.

Good luck - you've got a beauty there!

Price is a bit high, at least for around here in the states (I assume you are in or near Sweden). Do as Lindy says. Not sure if your fuel would have ethanol in it (again assuming you are in Europe), but not a bad idea to replace the fuel lines anyway due to their assumed age. Not a collectors item around here per-say, just a nice conversation piece when you motor up to a group of other boaters. Oh yes, and be sure to mix your fuel/oil ratio at 20:1 (TCW-3 oil). These older motors do not have rollerized bearings like your newer engine, and require extra lubrication as such.

I tought 425$ was a pretty ok price for a almost "new" engine, but as you mention is probably the prices a little higher here in Sweden on these engines. But in general is OMC and Mercury engines alot cheaper than japanese brands, many think they are american junk...:)....but i think most old outboards have to high prices on the used market.

I will change the impeller and transmission-oil, check the points etc. The fuel here in europe is so called "environmental" friendly, which means alot of ethanol and lower quality than before. So i will also change the fuel lines as you recommend.

Thanks for your advices..:)

Great find K650. Great old "Big Twin" motor. Tons of power for their weight, with lots of low end torque. They do eat gas, however, but it should be good fun on the weekends. Here are some great links that can walk you through a basic servicing and tune up and as well as a parts catalog with exploded diagrams of your entire motor. If you can't find what you need across the pond, you can get any and all routine parts you need right here at iboats.

Great, thanks!

In comparison with my Johnson 50hp -1983, does it use very much more gas?

Re: Evinrude 35 hp -1959

Hello again K650. Hard to say about the fuel consumption. A lot of it depends on the load it's pushing and how your run the motor (i.e. low speed trolling vs. running WOT often). Properly tuned, I think the fuel consumption should be about the same. The vintage 35hp may use a bit more perhaps. I used to have a '66 33 hp Johnson and I could run around all day on less than 6 gallons of gas (petrol, fuel) while pushing a 14' boat. The good news is that although it may consume more fuel, vintage OMC (Johnson/Evinrude) motors built from the mid '50s-mid '70s are famous for their reliability and ease of maintenance due to their simple, mechanical design. No electronics to fail, or become obsolete, unlike your later model 50 hp. So the little more you may spend on fuel, you'll more than make up for by being able to perform all of the maintenance for yourself. In fact, you can usually rebuild the carburetor, ignition and lower unit for about $100 US, which is less than the cost of a powerpack for most electronic ignitions.

It will be the coolest motor on the water for sure! You should probably approach speeds in the 30-35 mph range on most 14'-16' boats. Here are some vids of motors similar to yours.

How does the cowl look? The powerhead looks pristine, great find. Price is based on condition, and you seem to be good there.

24:1 is the fuel mixture. Let us know how the compression is.

I'd say you did real good on the price. a lot of vintage boat restore guy's would be begging for a chance to get a low hour engine like that, in such great looking shape. darn near show quality.

When i drained the transmissionoil did i notice some water, so to be on the safe side shall i change the bearings and seals in the cowl. The parts was available at the local Hansen-Marine dealer and at low prices...:)
