My 35 hp outboard got hot (impeller problem). It has spark and fuel, but may have low compression. After placing some 30w oil in each cylinder and turning over several times, compression returned. I've tried placing a little gas in each cylinder and replacing the plugs, but it still won't fire. Also tried starting fluid. Is this still a compression problem or something else. Any ideas where to look next.

I may be way off on this one, but since your compression returned when you put the oil in the cylinders it sounds like a stuck ring. Get a compression gauge and find out if you really have a compression problem first. If so let us know. If it is a compression problem your first option is to decarbonize and free your rings. Keep us posted so some of the real experts can help out.

There have been roughly a dozen different 'Rude 35s. Which one do you have?

JB

If you are up to it, you'll answer a lot of questions by pulling the head and checking the head gasket. Also, a close inspection of the plugs, before the oil, may shown the results of water. Were they super clean, if so could be water getting in through a blown head gasket. That's assuming some water was getting into the system. Overheating and compression problems points to the head gasket.
