hello, I am new to iboats. Just got a 76, 35 hp evinrude. Ran rough while out on the water. then, 8 seconds before it ran out of gas, it took off and ran wonderful, full of power and then nothing. Out of gas. I wonder if I didn't mix the fuel and oil properly. Seemed like a lot of blue smoke while I ran it. When I opened up the throttle, it still remained at half speed. Any ideas? Thanks, Christobol.

Could be an ignition problem, could be a carb problem, or both. I'd check to see if you have good spark first.

it ran great because it started to lean out as gas ran out.
I would rebuild carbs , spark gap test it too.

I'll watch to see what you find. Having the same problem with E-rude 6hp. All test so far have revealed no solution. Reaches around 1/2 RPM then just stays there.

Does sound like you are flooding a bit or Spark is to weak for fuel flow though.

i would suggest a carb cleaning and rebuild kit, then slow speed adjustments easy on that motor. all covered in the TOP SECRET FILE, top of the forum. also suggest link n sinc.

Running at half speed as some body kicked in with is almost always a result of running on one cylinder and is not a carburetor problem because the carburetor feeds both cylinders.

However, back to the original question. In this case is clearly is a matter of it running ok as it runs lean when it runs out of gas. That indicates that it is running too rich when it is not running out of gas. Could be leaking float valve, leaking gaskets in the carburetor, choke on, ruptured fuel pump diaphragm, and more. Choke on would be too easy, wouldn't it?

Chapter 2: 6 gal gas, 50:1 oil. Took boat to lake. Started fine. Ran as before at half speed. Three hours later engine would not start. Primer bulb would not get hard. I could hear it whooshing thru the line, but no ignition. Trolled all the way back:mad: Any additional thoughts? Thanks, Christobol.

still running to rich . i had similar problems a few years ago and it ran great as the fuel ran out. it was the float , it had a small hole in it and the needle valve was due for replacement. everyone has given great places to start trouble shooting.

Re: Evinrude 35 fuel burning problem

Your idea jogged my memory. In the past it wouldn't start, so I took the carb off and the needle was stuck in the "up" position and the float was not level, but tilting downward. I bent the float hinge so it was level and jostled the needle until it fell. Then I soaked it in carb cleaner overnight. The next day the needle seemed loose enough to reassemble the carb. It ran, but at half speed. Now it won't start again. Also, when it was running, it didn't cough and sputter in the idle position, but when I shifted it then I got half speed and sputtering. I'm probably close to getting this problem figured out. thanks, to all who help. Christobol.
