I got a nice looking Evinrude 2 hp, and it ran OK, but had sat for 10-12 years, so I thought replacing impeller would be good idea. Got one, and took very simple lower unit apart. There is no gasket?? Got it all back together, old impeller looked good, but put new one in, and I did the water tank test, ran well, but I noticed water was getting oily. Shut off, took out, and pulled filler plug. Oh, no! White oil!! Now what?? I don't see any "seal" to replace, and did not hammer in splined shaft when reassembling. It's a simple system, so I thought it would be a simple repair. Help??

Re: Evinrude 2hp impeller installation

Hey Graeyson,

What year is it? I am interested to see what happens here as I just picked up a 1976 Johnson 2HP and am about to do the same job.

Welcome to iBoats BTW!

In the first place, oil in the barrel is normal. Check the other 900 posts about that question on these forums. As for the gearcase oil, do you have any idea how long it took to get that way? If it were me, I'd change the oil and see how it looks after running it a few times. If it leaks excessivly, then by all means, fix it. However, it would be a good idea to first check for fish line wrapped around the prop shaft. Most people don't realize those seals are designed to keep the oil in, but are only marginal at keeping the water out. That's why the factory says to change the oil periodically.

Hey I have a 1990 Evinrude 3hp and recently did the same job. I am an amateur mechanic at best. I had the same issue of gear oil coming out of my exhaust after replacing impeller. I just emptied the remaining oil from the foot the refilled it and the problem was solved. My guess is that by dropping the lower unit something unseals and when you replace the lower unit it reseals. hope this helps and maybe someone can better explain why this happens.

I did check for fish line after taking prop off....wasn't much on there, but some. I did just get NOS seals for both the upper spline seal, and the prop seal. But will try and drain it and run it again, and see what it does, as some have said to do that, and it may stop. I felt the oil in the barrel of water was excessive, as it was a very heavy film. Thanks for info tho.

yep, the guy at Evinrude dealer said to try the same thing, as he had worked on 200 of these over the years. I did get new seals anyway, and may just use them if problem does not change. thanks, graeyson:)

in this 3, 4 hp motors you should fit in shift rod,
just fit in small hole in lower unit,
if will not fit so there wiil be permament forward gear and lower unit oil will float out
