I have an opportunity to buy an Evinurde 2hp at a pretty good price. I think it is a mid 1980s model. The motor is on a sailboat and it looks like an extra long shaft version from the attached picture. What would it take to convert it back to a short shaft? I think the shift rod and water tube could be cut to fit. I am thinking all I would need to get is a shorter driveshaft. Any estimate on the cost to convert it back?

Wow never seen one that long! I think if you can just track down a short shaft lower unit you can take the spacer out and bolt it all back together. Or just take the shift rod and driveshaft from a short shaft and put it in your lower unit, minus the spacer.

It looks incredibly long in the picture but it's not, it's a standard model with a 5" extension ( may have been available as a conversion kit rather than original)

You can cut the water tube. It has a fixed drive I think you will find so no shift rod to worry about. That only leaves the driveshaft to find.
About $125 according to the parts catalog but get the model number and check for that one specifically at http://shop.evinrude.com/

It's been worked hard if its driven that boat far!

That motor was on a 26 foot sailboat that sleeps 6! The guy now has 9.9 Evinrude on it.

I will have to get the exact model number but I checked on boats.net and for a 1985 2 hp they want $150 for the GEARCASE ASSY., Complete. I would presume that includes the drive shaft and water pump assembly but I better check. Seems like that would be the way to go since I would be replacing the water pump anyway.

Does anyone know how good these little motors are in terms or reliability? Evinrude built some good motors in 1980s. Just was wondering about the 2 hp?
