Simple question. My out board has 1 positive and 1 negative cable connection, my question is if I connect direct to the battery do I need a separate ground that connects to the boat? Or can I just simply just connect the positive an negative wires to the battery and be on my way?

Outboard = 1995 Evinrude 28 SPL electric start.

I dont have seperate one never did. My ground goes right back to battery. The motor is then grounded and your coils etc. are grounded to block. I hope I explained this ok. In my experience , the grnd on battery, is the main ground . Thats how I wired my fuse panel, a main ground to battery then all individual grounds are at panel, same with hot. I did install a main breaker in the line to panel.
One more thing , just a tip ,if you have wing nuts on battery. Throw them away, and replace with stainless nuts. I spray it with the red connection / sealant, you buy for batteries, at automotive store. This keeps corrosion down, to nothing.
Good-Luck,
KYHunter :)

Welcome to iboats!!

I think you are asking about a buss bar. That's a multi connection point for the ground, usually up around the console.

If you have a few devices that require a ground, run a large ground wire from the batt. up to a buss bar, then connect all your individual grounds onto the bar.

What I meant to say is, do I need to ground the motor from the negative cable to the boat? or can I just connect the positive cable to the positive battery terminal, and the negative to the negative terminal without grounding to the actual boat. The battery will only have the motor connected to it, and everything else will connect to a separate battery. Do I need to run a ground to the boat from the negative cable?

I wonder if plaid_retina is asking questions relative to grounding on an aluminum boat.

If you are plaid, there's no reason to ground the boat if all devices are wired correctly.
Every device should have a ground wire run to the ground bus, which is connected to the negative post of the battery.

The boat will, in fact, be grounded to the motor when in the water, but it shouldn't be used for a ground connection point for elec. devices.
