Evinrude 25hp not pulling, HELP!!!!

I have a late model Evinrude 25hp that has been acting like it is slipping. I took the prop off and had it rebuilt(new bushing and all the gouges repaired), the first trip out afterwards it started doing the same old thing. It acts just like a car with a worn clutch (lots of RPM's no UUUMMMPH!). Is there anything else that this could be? Several folks have told me that it is not possible to be in the lower unit but I am thinking otherwise. Any help would be much appreciated as I am really missing my boat right now.

When you say new bushing do you mean they replace the rubber hub in the prop? Is it possible that the prop is sucking air when you try to start planing out? Is the cavitation plate above the bottom of your boat? It should be level with the bottom or a little below the bottom of your boat.

EFHenry,
The cavitation plate is about 4 inches below the boat when it is down, and yes when the prop was rebuilt the inner bushing was replaced and it appears to be holding tightly. I checked this by leaving motor in gear and trying to turn it (not sure if this is correct way to check or not).

I don't suppose that you have hit anything hard with the prop lately. If you did it is possible that you stripped the gear on the drive shaft in the powerhead. I run the Ohio River a lot and had this happen to me on a submerged log running about 20 mph. Pretty much stopped me dead. Everything looked ok except prop was somewhat bent but turned out I somehow stripped that in the powerhead when the prop had been in the bind at those high rpm's before I could shut it down.

I like the idea that you are cavitating. Even if it is four inches under the water is that when you are running flat out? it could still be pulling air. I've people put a short shaft engine on boats that require a long shaft and wonder why they don't work. Not saying that this is your problem. Just throwing it out as a possibility.

Has the motor ever run right on this boat. It sure seems youre running a 20 inch motor on a 15 inch transom.Even if its not your slipping problem youre dragging too much motor through the water.
Good luck.
