I have a 1986 25HP Evinrude; Short shaft; electric start. It was bought out of surplus still in the box - never been started or serviced by a dealer. What are the set up and break-in procedures? My brother mentioned a spring in the fuel pump that gave trouble? It will be run in Vermont and Ontario fresh water on a 13' wood Lyman.
Thanks

Never been run??? WOW - Even though, I would suggest replacing the waterpump impeller, they don't like sitting for so many years. Also keep an eye on the fuel pump and carb gaskets, they may be dried out and/or cracked from non-use.

You need to run a 25:1 fuel/oil mix for about the first 10 gallons of fuel, after that 50:1 is fine. For the first 10 hours don't run at 1 set rpm more than 15 minutes. Not more than 1/2 throttle the first hour of operation. On the second hour of operation full throttle to plane the boat, then immediately reduce throttle to 3/4 or less. Next 8 hours full throttle operation permissible up to 15 minutes at a time. Keep an eye on the water output. If you got an owners manual with it, read it from cover to cover. NEVER disconnect the battery cables from the battery while the engine is running and I highly recommend using stainless steel ny-lock nuts rather than wing nuts to secure the cables to the battery terminals.

-John

I am going to start my 40HP on a stand in driveway today. I planned on just starting with auto startcables. What happenes if i start and disconnect. Will i harm rectifier ?
should cables stay on while running ?

G Dane-

Disconnecting the battery cables (or turning a battery selector switch off) while the engine is running will normally damage the rectifier (or rectifier regulator). The larger the capacity of the charging system, the greater the chance you can "let the smoke out" of rectifier and/or regulator.

-John
