Im about to purchase a 1993 Stratos 290 S/F with a 2007 Evinrude 225 E-tec HO. The motor was put on in 2011 and has all the service records. It there anything I need to look for moving forward.
Does anyone else have the same year motor that can share there experience?

pretty right seahorse !

somehow i feel that we get here more and more an invasion of people which about direct injected evinrudes have not much more to say than

a) hook it up to a computer b) every ficht is bad, stay away.

@gbrad : when it runs and sounds fine surely go for it, this engine is a masterpiece of engineering !

cheers

dont think anybody is trying to be rude aerobat, its bascially all you can do for these new motors.hooking up to the computer tells you everything with no fudging or outright lying on anybodys part.i have a 2011 etec (60hp)and its nothing short of amazing the info you can get off of the computer.i love my motor and love the peace of mind of a 6 year warranty.

One thing to keep in mind is that a computer cannot fix an engine. It is only a tool for collecting data and even then, it is only certain data that it recognizes. For years I've been saying that these new low-emission computer-controlled engines are not like the Starship Enterprise, thier computers only record cetain environmental conditions and monitor only a handful of electrical items. A technician still has to have the knowledge of basic engtine operation and systems to repair them. The day is not here yet where you can plug into the engine and you will be directed to the exact part that is soon to fail and cause problems.

In this day and age when a Ficht or E-Tec comes into the shop the first thing you do is hook up a computer to it to see what is or has been going on. With out doing that it's like peeing into the wind. It's not like the carbed mtr days.

i have a 2011 etec (60hp)and its nothing short of amazing the info you can get off of the computer.

thats right, some fancy things like WOT time, max reached rpm,s , max temperatures and many more are recorded, but like seahorse says- it cannot repair an engine. it nevertheless helps to point you in the right direction.

in the situation of the OP i quess he looks for an engine without any issues so hooking it up to the diagnostic may not be the primary goal.

the next point are the fichts and the nightmares about them. mostly based on " i had a friend whos friend had such an engine and knows somebody at the marina who had problems so these engines are bad"

well, i had a 150 V6 ficht ram and it was a hell of an great engine , first hand experience. the new owner also loves this engine, starting turn key and running all day long with a punch when you gun it that you won,t miss anymore !

i was smokeless, smooth and powerfull on the water when the carbed 2stroke guys primed the ball, pumped the throttle and cranked the engine to finally wake it up in a huge blue cloud- the etecs and modified fichts are a completely different league.

i think the etecs are the very best in 2 stroke direct injection design, the original fichts being the father of this technology may had problems but the modified bormardier build ficht "rams" were close to the etecs.

beyond the basics of always keep the eyes open buying a boat and the knowledge you can basicly run with every engine into problems -an etec as well the modified ficht are very good engines in my opinion !

cheers

I'll take my carbed mtr anyday when it comes to cost of repairs compaired to the cost of those Fichts. Granted, they weren't to bad after BRP took over but before that they sucked.

Re: Evinrude 225 E-tec HO stories

i think seahorse5 gave the prospective owner the best advise by telling them to go to etec owners group, its a good resource for us.in my case it wasnt that my 82 90hp rude was bad (it was running fine) but the fact that i just retired and maybe id never get another chance to buy a new motor.(25,000 bonus to retire).this is my last motor i hope.so far there isnt anything that i dont like about it atall even the fact that i really cant do very much uner the hood to me thats just fine .actually theres nothing i can do under the hood except add oil once in awhile.you know since ive owned this motor i havnt even squeezed the primer bulb!just turn the key and 3/4 of a turn of the flywheel she,s running.it was a super bonus that when i bought my motor, merc had come out with a 5 year warranty so brp responded right away with 6 years.the dealer also through in the prop ,extra xd100 oil,and took off the old motor and installed for free.(lots of places charge extra for rigging).ok, love in with etec is over, lol!:D
