First time posting in a long time. Posted before but couldn't remember login. Anyway alot of good info on this site. I have a 89 evininrude 225, that keeps getting exaust stains down midsection of engine. The enginge is running good, but I'm not sure if this will have an effect on performace or cause damage. I plan on replaceing the waterpump soon and was wondering if I could fix this poblem(if it is one) while doing this. Or does the powerhead have to be removed to fix this. Thanks in advance.

JM..... Regardless of where that exhaust stain is coming from, it's something you want to correct. I'd suggest that you remove the port and starboard hood pans so that you can view all portions of the powerhead etc. I once encountered a new engine with very few hours whereas all of the powerhead retaining bolts were backing out (weren't secured properly at the factory). Hopefully this is not your problem. Let us know what you find.

Thnaks for the reply. Ok I finally pulled the covers. It looks like the leak is the gasket on to of the midsection. Is it possible to change this gasket without removing the powerhead? The little reading in the manual I have been doing says to remove the powerhead first.

If the leak is between the powerhead and exhaust adapter, ya gotta pull the powerhead. If the leak is between the outer exhaust housing and the gear case, that's normal.

c/6

Hooty

so I shouldn't worry about it? It is below the exaust adapter. It just always get black stains down the side of the midsetion.

also I was wondering, some of the head bolts are srarting to rust. Is is safe to replace these one at a time and then retorque. And can you replace them with stainless, I know that stainless is not as strong though.
