I bought an evinrude 2 h.p. and think I got screwed. It was running in a bucket when I bought it. I got it home and it started and ran for about 5 minutes then quit. I drained the internal fuel tank and put fresh gas and oil 50:1 mixture. I replaced the spark plug. I waited until the next day to try it again, it started on the second pull and ran for only 5 minutes. It seemed to get really hot and was smoking. Maybe because its old. 1974 eveinrude mate 2. The water in the bucket had black oil in it and oil dripping from some holes on the middle of the shaft. The motor has spark, but will not turn over at all now.
The took the screw off on the bottom of the shaft to check the lube. It was vanilla color. Is the good or bad? Please help.

serrano,

The lube should not be milky colored. The lower unit is leaking.

I think you have bigger problems now. I believe you cooked the powerhead. More than likely, the water pump wasn't working
