Hi All,

I was given a '73 Evinrude 6HP as a gift and I'm trying to tune it up according to the service manual that covers a couple of different years/models.

I'm stumped by the reference to adjusting the High Speed Nozzle by seating it and backing it out 3/4 turn.

Does this engine even have an adjustable High Speed Valve???

Thanks for the help!!!

It does not, it is a fixed jet.

The slow speed you can adjust.

Awesome! Thanks, BigB9000!

Last question for the win.... :)

The adjustment also mentions tightening the throttle lever tension screw so it holds an RPM. The throttle cam seems to have some free movement and I can't figure out where this adjustment is. The attached picture is the figure referenced, but nothing is highlighted.

HI Al-53!

Thanks for the reply! My engine doesn't look like the pic though. Here's mine:

There is a LOT of play between the tiller throttle handle and the cam throttle to carb.

Thanks for the help, raczekp1!

Still trying to figure out how to tighten up the mechanism for the throttle cam though. The play makes it hard to maintain a steady RPM. Also seems that the tiller handle doesn't have the full range of motion to align with all the settings from STOP to FAST. START works pretty well, but anything below that (SHIFT, SLOW) all stop the engine. Not sure if it is just a rough guide or not.

Appreciate all the guidance folks. Have a great Labor Day Weekend!

The "throttle lever tension screw" is the slotted head screw in figure 41 that the white arrow is pointing to just over 1/2 way down near the LHS of the picture ;)

It does not apply to models with a twist grip , only to smaller engines with a throttle lever. ( You a're looking at the wrong side anyway  )

It is screw #38 in the diagram of a 4hp engine on THIS PAGE

The twist grip has a friction block which is presumably worn or suffereing from a weak spring or too much lubrication perhaps. The friction block and the spring are parts # 81 and 82 in the diagram HERE.

PITA when the throttle wont stay set. My '84 model is worse because it does not even have the friction block. Later 8 hp models had a clamp so you could set it and clamp it!

Provided you can get the full throttle range ignore the markings on the tiller! Check that when the twist grip is turned to maximum that the throttle plate in the carb is fully opened . That is part #3 on shaft #2 in this diagram
