Re: evinrude 1966 starflite 100s, selectric + new ignition switch

If I remember correctly.
The red wire goes on the "B" terminal.
The 2 "M" terminals should have black wires on them.
The "A" terminal should have purple wire.
The "S" terminal should have a white wire.
Could not put my hands on a manual, I am sure someone will come along and confirm or correct me.

Looks good. On that mtr nothing goes to the "M" terminals tho' as they are for magneto ignition. You have battery ign.

The A terminal

What has been discussed here will work, but is far from being correct. To begin with, that ignition switch will work, but the original only had 3 terminals. And there are a lot more wires involved. And do you have the red&white special resistance wire? If not, you will burn up the coil and points in short order.

Somebody once told me the resistance wire was built into the harness that went from the key sw to the coil.

Does it blow the fuse when turn the key to ON, or does it blow when you turn to START?

Do you have the correct size fuse in it ?

Re: evinrude 1966 starflite 100s, selectric + new ignition switch

Have you got the proper size in it?
According to the schematic in post#7, the fuse feeds the ign switch. If it will run for 30 seconds and then blows the fuse, try disconnecting everything on the run side of the switch and see if it will still blow the fuse. Maybe you have a short in the choke or something else on that terminal on the ign switch.

Re: evinrude 1966 starflite 100s, selectric + new ignition switch

**UPDATE**

Ok i removed all wires for accessories and still blew the fuse on all terminals apart from the starter terminal so i left it on there for now.

tried putting into gear and still nothing.

I checked to see if voltage was running through when i put into gear and that worked ok, reverse had power when forward did not and nothing when in neutral.

what i dont understand now is.
the blue and green leading down to the gears when i connect these to voltage meter they are both live when i touch a positive, is this correct? (nothing is connected to these so i are they earthed by the case? should they not be earthed?)

this is all i can work out im stuck again

Re: evinrude 1966 starflite 100s, selectric + new ignition switch

Your lower unit uses a coil and spring setup to shift it. The green wire energizes the forward coil causing the spring to tighten around the hub. The same thing happens when you energize the reverse coil. The shift switch supplies voltage to the green wire for forward and voltage to the blue wire for reverse, neither wire should have voltage on it in neutral. You can disconnect the wires going down to the lower unit and use a volt meter or test light to check the shift switch. The coils are grounded through the case.

Re: evinrude 1966 starflite 100s, selectric + new ignition switch

****UPDATE****

Took the lower unit apart again just to make sure all wires were connected and everything is ok.
racking my brains following all replies in these posts and still unable to figure out why no gears at all.

today i connected a wire to the battery and to the 2 gear wires. now i think there is a problem.
when the select is in forward i connect the battery to forward and the engine tries to start ( now thats not right)
so i connected the battery wire to reverse (still in foward on selectric) and the reverse gear locked into place.

changed the selectric to reverse and touched the reverse gear wire and the engine tried to start? still in reverse on selectric i touched the forward and the gears locked into place.

now i can not figure out why this is happening all wiring diagrams look correct.

any ideas?

Thanks

Re: evinrude 1966 starflite 100s, selectric + new ignition switch

***UPDATE**

Traced the wires back and only thing i could work out was to change the selectric live wire from the ignition S connector to the A connector and i have forward gear again. It blew a couple of fuses when i connected choke wire so disconnected that, it also blew a fuse when i put it into reverse, this i don't understand. But the reverse looks as thou i need to buy a new Vintage Coil ($225 ouch)
