I am going to change the waterpump impeller on a 1958 7hp Evinrude and have been told that I will have to replace the head gasket seal also. I know I can buy the water pump impeller at Napa, but wher can I by the seal?
I do not see the corralation between the two, unless you have a blown head gasket.

However, your local John/Rude dealer will have, or can get, the gasket.
I must not have have good information on the repair. I was told to get the waterpump I would have to remove head and replace this seal when I put it back together. I have done my 1956 3hp and didn't have to do anything like this but was told this one was different
I beleive the seal you are referring to is the carbon seal at the top of the driveshaft. There is a series of washers, spring, and a carbon seal held in place by a pin in the driveshaft. These must be in place in the proper order prior to reassembly. The carbon seal itself may be okay, but it has an o-ring nested inside it that should probably be replaced. Be sure to liberally grease the driveshaft splines prior to reassembly.

- Scott
