Hi,
I have an 18 hp Evinrude that was given to me recently. It has been sitting for many many years (I'm guessing atleast 15 years). I looked for a model # on the motor but was unsuccessful. I did find a seriel # , but I don't think that will help.
The only info I was able to find was on the inside cover of the motor. It said at 4500 rpms the motor is equivalent to 18 hp.
The cover splits in two and flips up one one side. If you take out two screwa and the choke cap the whole thing comes off. Also it uses J6-J Champion spark plugs. Two cylinder. Does that help?
I hope that is enough info for someone to help me find out the year to this thing. It looks very old!!!
If anyone has any info at all please let me know.

If memory serves me correctly, that type hinged hood was used in 1957 and
1958.

There should be a plate on the port (left) transom bracket with the model and serial number imprinted upon it. Also on the powerhead, you may find a quarter size core plug with those same numbers.

Let us know what numbers you find. We need the model number to I.D. the engine...... and usually both the model and serial number are listed together.

sorry but that is not enough info, at least for myself. you are most likely to find the model number tagged on the transom clamp of the motor, in the mean time I am sure that if you posted the serial number one of us would be able to help you a little better.

I looked over every square inch of the motor and only found the serial number tag and the same number stamped on the core plug (if that's what it is called).
The number is 15926-04444. I find it very strange that there is no model number stamped on a plate like the serial number. But like I said...I looked the engine over inside and out.
Thank you.

15926 is the model number we need. It makes it an 18hp from 1958

Plugs shold now be J4C gapped at 0.030" I guess the originals would have been J4J

15926-04444....... 15926 is the model number, 04444 is the serial number. And as Vic states, it is a 1958 18hp Evinrude.

The alternative spark plug is the Champion J6C, gapped at .030 which may provide a somewhat improved performance.
