I have a evinrude 175 and for some reason its been nothing but trouble. I bought it off e-bay and the boat itself is good but the motor stinks. I have had the carbs redone and alot of the wiring redone, but it still wont run. I can fully charge the battery and before I can crank the motor its dead. Could this be my starter is shot and I just dont have enough to turn the flywheel or what? I took the starter apart last night and cleaned it up thinking maybe it would help but still nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

Howdy, Kerstets.

You need to track down what is killing your battery first. After that is solved, we can attack your engine, if it really needs attacking.

Does the battery stay charged if disconnected?

Does it read 12.5volts when disconnected?

What voltage does it read when connected but everything is turned off?

Disconnect every load, one at a time and read battery voltage. As you remove the one that is draining your battery the voltage will go back to 12.5v.

Let us know what you find. :)

Thanks JB I will try that and see. I am also going to run a pair of jumper cables from the battery to the starter to see if there is something bad between the 2 is that a good idea or not?

another question..... If I run jumper cables from the battery to the starter the only thing that is happening is the bendix is turning but its not kicking up to engage the flywheel. does this mean my starter is shot?

In my old merc, the starter gear is on a screw that turns up & the gear up to engage the flywheel. If battery is low it will not spin fast enough to make the gear go up. On a car there is a separate arm that pushes the gear up to engage it. See what you have, normaly will be a bulge or cover on side of round starter with this in there if present. If the screw type like the merc, it should be lubed with light oil to work good and move by hand easy. You should be able to use pliers or two screwdrivers to short bigger cables from one side of your starter silenoid to the other to do this anyway. One side goes to starter and other to battery if you can get at it. Like above post, get your meter out and check the voltage. Could be some simple wiring problem.
