Ok so I have been thinking about buying motors from people and fixing them and selling them. And I happened upon this mid 80's 175 V6 evinrude for 300 bucks controls and all. The guy is selling it because he never fixed his transom. It hasn't run in a few years but ran when he bought it (supposedly). The motor looks pretty clean. I am thinking even if the darn thing doesn't run I can make a profit by parting it out. Has anyone done this before and do these big old 2 strokes have any value? Pros and cons and advice would be great from anyone who has attempted this before. Could I get my $300 out of it in parts ya think?

Not sure the pics will go through?

Re: Evinrude 175 mid 80s model for $300 bucks?

I love doing this for a lot of reasons. I like to stay on the market and find me some keepers. I also like the experience that I gain on different manufacturers. If I get a motor that ends up being more than I want to get into, I part it out on Ebay and normally make relatively good money for it. If you enjoy it, go for it. If you are doing it to turn a profit, it may be harder than meets the eye.

I always check compression, spark, and lower unit. I like to make sure all of the linkages and elusive parts are there, and I havent really run into any issues by doing this. If I run into a motor with seriously low compression, I can usually sell the lower unit alone for more than I pay for the entire motor.

Check compression, and make sure prop shaft isnt bent, maybe drain the L/U oil. If all that checks out, $300 is a great deal, but Id still try and get it for $200. :) That motor is just taking up space in his yard. He probably just wants it GONE!

Thanks for the reply sutor and of course I am not going to offer him 300 ;) Yeah I am going to go look at it tomorrow probably and will be bringing a compression checker. Yeah it looks and sounds like he just wants it gone so I will put it in my shop and if all checks out and looks good I will rebuild the carbs and sell it as a runner. If it looks like to much to get her going then I will dismantle and part it out. It won't fit on my 14ft boat so I have no use for it really. Will be a fun thing to tinker with and maybe make a few hundred bucks.

You could remove the spark plugs and rotate the flywheel by hand. Shine a pencil light in each plug hole and inspect the cylinder walls and piston tops. See if the flywheel rotates freely. You could take a battery with you, a set of jumper cables and a compression gauge. You can spin the flywheel at 200-250 rpm by jumping the starter. Good to get a compression reading prior to purchase. Would be helpful to know the model number from the engine to identify just what year it is. The 175 model up through 1985 was a small bore 150 flatback with larger carbs. In 1986 and up, the 175 was actually a detuned big bore 235. This larger cubed engine is way underrated at 175. The latter would have more value than the small bore version. You need to ask about the control box/electrical harness and the oil tank for the VRO system. Even if the engine is blown, you could probably part it out and recover your purchase price. Likely the lower unit alone is worth $ 300. Not to mention the power trim, electronics and carbs. Don't forget to ask about any props for it, too.

That is good info to know emdsapmgr, thank you :) I am calling the guy in a few and will see if he can give me the model number off the motor.

Looks to be a 1987 model from the cowling and it should be the big bore with pot belly exhaust. It worth$300 if you get controls and props. That motor in my area if running w/controls and prop would sell for about $850 -$1000.
