I bought a 15hp out of the paper today. Overall its in good shape. Its been sitting for 2 years. Anyways I put new spark plugs in and fresh fuel and tried to get it fired up. It didnt even sputter. I put a spark tester on both wires and nothing. I checked my connections and the switch in the tiller as well. I have it in neutral position for starts but no dice. Where do I go from here? Does this model have points or something under the flywheel? Is there a way to check the coils? I do not have a manual for it. Its a 1969 model E15RCDE. Thanks for any help.

Have a look at this site for a wealth of really good information regarding your motor. It sounds like your tiller kill switch might be closed to me. Disconnect one wire to it so you know it can't be closing. Your motor is a 1986 according to the model number you give (you use the CD not the DE). Best of luck. Rick.

A 1986 eh???? so much for my decoding skills. That explains the electronic ignition wonder box inside. Thanks that will make getting the right parts easy. I already disconected the tiller switch to see if that was my issue and no change. I was going to pull the flywheel off today but not sure that I need to. Thanks for the link, and any further suggestions would be great.

the site...cdielectronics.com....has your information on testing the ignition system....under "Support", "Downloads", "Johnson/Evinrude DVA"...look around their site and it'll explain dva and what you need to test it...search iboats for building your own dva adaptor if you want to that route...

I will check it out Thanks! On that note, I recleaned all the connectors going to the power pack as well as the grounds and such for the coils. I have some spark now. How strong I dont know as I need to buy a tester when I can get to town. Stay tuned because I am sure there will be more questions

Re: Evinrude 15hp no spark

Happy days! It fired up and ran good! So I went and bought a spark checking tool this morning from napa. Hooked it all up and it would not jump the gap. So I went back over all the connectors and super cleaned them and all grounds again and bang, I got good spark. Hooked up the tank and dropped it in my run barrel and she fired on 2nd pull. There are a few bugs to work out such as I need to torque the nut that hold the flywheel on. Anybody have the spec handy? Also I was not impressed with the water that was closer to a fast drip out of the pee hole at idle. It picked up to a weak stream at faster engine speeds. I have never attempted a impellar change, is it brain surgery or can a semi functional idiot do the job?

flywheel nut torque...45-50 ftlbs....leeroy's ramblings should get you through the impeller replacement...I'd suggest running some weed eater line or like diameter wire into the water indicator tube as it may be clogged...while the lower unit is off...attach a hose to the copper pipe that extends up into the powerhead and flush it out....doesn't take a lot of pressure...in fact, I've put a clear piece of vinyl tubing on it and forced water up it using lung power...sorta like blowing up a balloon...might not want the neighbors to witness this, mine would just have their concerns confirmed

Ok thanks for the tips and numbers I will give it a go! As far as the neighbors go, well I scared them off long ago!
Oh I was also wondering, the electrical connectors. Can I smudge them with something like dielectric grease or something to help keep corrosion away?

I have a 1986 15hp evinrude with no spark at the plugs. It ran good In tell we rebuilt the carburetor. After rebuilding the carburetor it tried to start once and that was it. I replaced the fuel pump new plugs and nothing, then I bought a spark plug tester and found out I’m getting no speak at the plugs. Please help I’m not sure where to start thanks
