Evinrude 150 XP high idle at start

Hi guys,

Just bought an evinrude 150 XP for my boat. It is in excellent condition and has had the VRO system removed. When I start it at home on the hose, it goes into a high idle for maybe 15-30 seconds and the it goes back down to a normal idle. This happens without the high idle lever raised.

Can anyone tell me what is causing this and how I can fix it? Someone told me that this is normal and is called a "fast start" and helps the engine cold start. Once the blocks reach a certain temp, the high idle stops. I don't really like this, I am just some what afraid of the motor blowing.....

Totally normal. No issue here. Should be idling around 1200rpms when quick start is running. If you dont like it, you can disconnect the black/white wire from the power pack and hook a wire to ground and it will disengage it after 5 seconds. Honestly, Id leave it alone.

The Quickstart feature helps the engine run when it's cold. Advances the timing so it won't die. Normal to see a high idle. This advance stays in place till the powerhead reaches 92 degrees, or until you rev the engine above something like 1200 rpm's. A nice feature I'd leave alone.

It is idling way above 1200 rpms... it hit upwards of 4k according to the tach.

It didn't do this when I tested it before I bought it. It did the high rev but not that high and it came back down as mentioned above when I started playing with the idle control level on the control box. I am hoping I didn't damage anything transferring it between boats, but that was fairly simple. Just disconnect and reconnect lines with plugs.

I am assuming if I disconnect the black and white wire, I am assuming that is on both power packs?

Check the throttle linkage to make sure it is not stuck open. I have had it happen....

Well it would be a coincidence to say the least.
I would disconnect the cables but keep the plug in and see what happens- dont adjust anything

If the high idle was not a problem when you were looking to purchase it-it's likely just an adjustment problem. When you set the new engine up, did you transfer the matching control box from the other boat, or just use one that was on your boat already? I'd check the timer base to make sure it's not stuck on some higher throttle setting. The grease under the timer base does dry out with age and it can stick..

A model # would help to determine if the motor even has the " quickstart " feature.

I found the problem guys.

Throttle cable was bent/broken forcing the engine to throttle up. Thanks anyway,

Thats why you do as i said, disconnect the cables to isolate the problem. enjoy
