hi guys i have a evinrude 140hp 1990 model i just brought the boat and motor but for some reason it wont idle when out of the water on muff's but when its in the water the motor idle's perfectly do u know whats going on?

it will idle faster when on muffs, due to the fact that there is not any backpressure on the exhaust. but, do not run it higher than 1500 rpms, on muffs, you can get a run away situation. your idle speed, in the water, in gear, should be adjusted to 650-750 rpms, or as low as you can get it, with out it stalling.

the usually complaint is it will run on muffs, and not in the water. which is the idle speed is too low.
