Evinrude 140 questions (1980's model I think)

Can someone help please with some questions I have on my engine. I am an inexperienced outboard owner. My engine coolant tell tail does not stream a jet of water like I see on other engines but simply flows out. Is this normal for this type of engine. I think the pump may need replacing.

I understand the alternator on a two stroke is totally different. When I measure the output across the battery, I see only a steady increase on voltage after starting the engine. The output goes from aboyt 10 volts to 12 volts in about 30 mins. I was expecting 13 or so volts and then a decrease when the battery is charged. Do I have a problem or is this normal ?

Lastly, my tacho doesn't work although there is voltage there. I haven't a clue why.

I live in Oman and don't have a manual - yet, but hopefully I can get one shipped using this site.

Grateful for any help.

A service manual is indeed your first step. Good idea.

The stream from the overboard indicator depends somewhat on how it's hosed. If the hose itself simply goes out thru the pan unrestricted the stream will be larger and free flowing. If the hose goes to a fitting in the pan it will be restricted a little and that proguces a smaller but stronger stream. Like putting your thumb over the end of the garden hose.

If you don't know the history of the pump I would suggest installing a new one. Then you will know how much pressure a new one shows on your gauge and can monitor it's wear easily.

I would guess your rectifier is bad on one side. That is a possible reason for both of your other concerns. Your charging system is relatively small compared to some but should still come up over 13 volts in a short time as long as you are over about 2000 RPM or so.

Good luck!

Dhadley, thanks for the information. The voltage does steadily increase.

When I get soem seals I will have a look at the pump. I found that when I am in the sea I do get a stream from the outflow, but it is not a powerfull one like I see on some boats. There just must not be enough pressure from the hose pipe???
