Re: evinrude 140 blown again

The crossflow motor you have is one of the most reliable ones out there. It is very unusual to pop a clip, let alone 4. Tell us exactly what the motor is doing like RPM's, fuel grade, oil, spark plugs and brand of water pump.

Good luck!

Re: evinrude 140 blown again

water pump OMC, spark plugs champion L77 jc4,oil TCW3,fuel grade reformulated 89 octane,RPM's 5000 @ WOT, wrist pin snap rings are not true arch snap rings, motor has about less than 100 hours since last build, there is no other cylinder damage other than wrist pin. Was operating at 3800 RPM when it dropped the snap ring under perfect weather conditions. Engine was running cool with ample water supply. The boat is 17.5 ft bass boat, two people in the boat, not over loaded. Any more questions, please reply. I will try to answer them. Thanks!

Re: evinrude 140 blown again

Is it always the same piston? Was the sharp edge of the ring installed facing outward? Were they reused from previous overhauls and possibly over-stressed?

I agree. If a different brand clip is being used than the piston that is a problem.

And 5000 RPM at WOT is really stressing the piston at the wrist pin area anyway even at 3800 RPM.

Good luck!

Re: evinrude 140 blown again

omc has 2 different wrist pin snap rings #1 is a 3/4 wire retaining clip.#2 is a truarc snap ring.I was given the wire clip with the rebuild kit from omc. the first 2 rebuilds were professional. I built the last one. I thought I would give some of that C.G. training that you paid for to good use!LOL As for the new pistons I dont rember what brand.
