Hello everybody and thanks for your help. I'm trying to help my old man out with his 1973 Evinrude 135 hp outboard. I don't know too much about this motor but a mechanic told my dad he thought it was "an easy fix" when he told him it just dies when put in gear. So before he takes it into the shop I was wondering if anyone can share some insight as to what this easy fix might be? I don't want my dad to throw good money after bad so any other information about this motor (potential problems, potential life of this motor, etc) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge.

First off do a compression check on the motor and see what the numbers are. It could be an easy fix in that the linkage isn't synced and there isn't any timing advance when the throttle is advanced. Have you ran the motor on muffs to see what it does? It could be a fuel delivery problem too. When was the last time it was tuned up?

After doing the above items, check all 4 plugwires for spark when cranking the engine. You can use a spark-checker or an inductive timing light.

Hey guys decided to do another carb run through and clean and it seems to be running pretty good on muffs. Have yet to take it out the lake and try it but it doesn't die in gear now. Thanks for your help.
