Evinrude 130 horse problem

I have a 96 Evinrude 130hp. The motor fires right up but has a problem accelerating ONLY when in gear and in the water. The last time I took the boat out I had to give it neutral throttle for a while (long enough to warm up) before it would run when in gear. After it had warmed up it would run flawlessly throughout the power-band.

After fishing for a while I would start the engine and it would run fine until I put it in gear, it would then bog down and shut off. However, it would run with no problem while using neutral throttle.

I had been told one or more of the high speed jets were clogged.

I have ordered the carb kits and I am waiting for them so I can complete the rebuilds.

I have already: checked the timing, spark, changed fuel filter and replaced the plugs.

If anyone has any more insight on my problem or carb rebuild advice I would appreciate the feedback.

Re: Evinrude 130 horse problem

Your motor has QuikStart, which automatically advances the throttle and timing for warm-up.

When the engine water temperature reaches +/-96? F. or the RPM reaches 1100, whichever comes first, QuikStart disables.

If you raise the RPM to 1100 RPM before the engine warms by using neutral throttle, you disable QuikStart prematurely.

If you set timing statically without disabling QuikStart, your timing will be 5 degrees off.

Carb rebuild is very simple, be sure to run wire thru the jets,
there are a few videos for DIY on youtube.com
search for marine doctor vids, jason shows how rebuild johnson 115 carbs.

I found it harder to remove the carbs than the actual rebuilding.

I checked the timing while the motor was already warm so I believe I am good. I will re-check again making sure I disable the QuickStart.

Thanks,

I have completed the rebuild and the problem still persists, only slightly less. How should the jets be adjusted on my particular carbs?

The Initial low speed setting for the 1996 130 90 LV is 3-1/2 360 degree turns.

Thanks, I am assuming I should loosely bottom out the needle valve spring before making my adjustments, correct?

I have never adjusted a carb valve with spring before.

Turn in until very lightly seated, then back out 3-1/2 full turns.
