Re: Evinrude 115 HP Check List

If you don't know condition, REPLACE WATER PUMP NOW it is the cheapest insurance against toasting the motor. The water pump will not suck out of a bucket, the lower unit needs to be submerged above the lower unit to work, and NEVER run the motor without muffs on it. There are two drain plugs for the lower unit, one down low near the skeg (fin on the bottom) and one up near the cavitation plate, you need to pull both to drain and refill the lower unit make sure to use new gaskets on the screws. The plugs should be .030. The actual compression numbers aren't as important as they be within 10% of each other, one low one could be trouble. No need to suck out the intakes unless you know somethings in there. The manual will tell you timing and idle rpm. If this hasn't run in a while a carb rebuild would be good also.
