Hello everybody:I have an evinrude 115 hp two stroke, 4 cylinders, the engine start perfect and does not turn off, but with it consumes a whole gallon of gas in 7 minutes, it is normal for this engine? i bought this engine 15 days ago, it has good compression in the 4 cylinders, what could be the problem of this engine? please help.

Were you running full throttle? That would translate into 8.4 gallons per hour which is probably pretty reasonable for that outboard. Although the guys running the larger engines will be able to confirm it. It has been years since I have ran a V4 but they were always pretty thirsty.

That sounds about right for your engine. I also have an '85 115hp that averages 8-10 gallons per hour at wide open throttle. Depends on the boat your trying to push!

Fuel economy is relative:

1. What are you pushing?

2. How fast are you pushing it?

A Crossflow V-4 can consume as little as 6 gal/hour or as much as 12 gal/hour.

My experience with 90 HP's is that "flogging it" (water skiing) can consume upwards of 10 gal/hour. Cruising, less than 6.

A very very rough rule of thumb is that at WOT an engine will consume approximately 1/10 of it's maximum HP in gallons per hour. Welcome to the world of big outboards. At today's prices, when I'm haulin' #$% I figure it's costing me about $1.50 per minute (OUCH !!!).

the engine start perfect and does not turn off, .

two strokes are dumb but very strong motors. once they start they will start, and can even keep themselves going for a while even with the ignition off. i had this problem and i ended up changing a power pack. so that might be you issue since it fixed my similar issue.

I don't think that is what they mean by; "not turn off".

haha, i guess we all read into something differently.it caught my eye because litterally my motor didnt turn off when i turned the key to the off position. anyway, there goes my two cents.

as far as gas consumption goes, my 88 guzzles gas like no other as well. if im towing a tube, i can run through 5 gals in almost no time.

Sounds like it's running great! The thing to do here is not hook up any more 1 gallon tanks to a V4 and you should be all set ;)

I too had a "......." moment the first time I hooked up a 1 gallon tank to my 140 to de-carbon but it's just the way it is. We're pretty inefficient. Fun though.

Eyes stinging, coughing. OH what fun. One gallon, what was that-10 minutes-at idle?

I love it when the outboard guys start complaining about fuel economy! Try a 454 big block......you must feed the monster! I swear I don't know where it all goes....you just keep pouring gas in.
