I have a 1996 115 Evinrude Intruder (model # E115GLEDR) outboard engine that is leaking gas. The engine runs fine through all power settings but I get a gas smell and a large oil slick when I stop on the lake. On investigation I found the lower left carb leaking at the weep hole on the fuel bowl when the gas line bulb is squeezed. I believe the float height may be set to high or the needle is not seating. I removed the carb and looked at the float, needle, and seat but did not see any obvious problems. Does anyone know the float height setting and how the measurement is taken? Also, any insight into the problem would be appreciated.

Here is an extract out of the link reference above:

"when i install floats, turn the carb up side down, now adjust the carb, so that there is just a little more space on the loose side, than the hinged side. this asures the needle closes. did you replace all the gaskets, tighten all the screws. now that the carb is together, attach a piece of hose to the carb, and blow into it. right side up, no air should pass, upside down you should be able to blow fairly easily. this shows that the float needle is sealing."

Also, not the test in the last two sentences above.

I get the same symptons...gas smell and oil slick when i stiop. I noticed that a plugged passage on the side of the carb weeps gas....very slowly...but it doesnt take much to have a smell. or stain the water..

this passge looked like it was a contstruction passage that is sealed afterwards.....from behind the engine it is on the right side...the lower carb doesnt seem to be weeping, and I cant see the other sides carbs....

I has degreased the area very good with a industrial electrical degreaser and quickly applied some super glue soaked bits of paper towels... and it worked for a month or so.

Entry by Dhadley in another thread:

Very common. And easily fixed. When you clean the carbs, dry that "BB" area with something like Electra Clean. Then a little dab of epoxy will cure the leak. It's common enough that this is a part of any 60* carb rebuild even if the BB isn't leaking now.

Took the carb off again. The bowl of the carb will not hold fuel. As soon as fuel is added to the bowl is drains out of the weep hole on the side of the bowl. I believe a part may be missing from the bowl assembly. Is there suppose to be a check valve in the bottom of the bowl? When I purchased the boat a few months back the previous owner said the carbs had been gone through. I'm wondering if the check valve was not put back in. The way it is now as soon as fuel is pumped into the bowl it leaks out of the bowl into the engine housing through the passage in the bottom of the bowl.

See if there is a small ball in the other carburetors where that one is leaking. If so, you can fill the hole with JB Weld after cleaning and drying it.

Re: Evinrude 115 carb float height

Thanks to all who replied. I ordered a new float bowl from the local marina since the cost was low. On inspection of the new bowl I now understand the replies better. There is a "BB" in the hole I referred to as a "weep" hole. I believe its only function is to seal the passage. I will seal the hole in the old bowl and keep it as a spare since I'm sure the problem will surface again with the other three carbs. Thanks to all again.
