I have a '96 Evinrude 112hp (mod # E112T5XEDR) with low compression in one cylinder due to a broken ring. Rather than rebuilding this motor, I've been searching CL for several weeks looking for a replacement OMC motor that is similar in age and power. I have come across several that were similar but all were freshwater motors with shorter shafts. According to the Evinrude model number decoder, my engine has an X-long 25" shaft. Because of this, I'm now considering swapping out just the powerhead. My question is this: is it possible to replace my damaged saltwater powerhead with a freshwater powerhead? If so, what if any other model years / hp ratings would be interchangeable with my '96 112? Thanks!
