So i have searched other posts but mine seems to be a bit different than others. i just swamped power heads and messed with the throttle linkage and now it will start (although not great) but stalls when going into gear UNLESS i pull the linkage to the timer base (i think that is what it is called, see picture) towards the bow of the boat. Once it gets up to speed I dont have to pull on that anymore.

What did i do? i asusme i messed with something regarding the low RPM timing. when swapping out the power heads i kept the motor as intact as possible, only removing the intake forward to rebuild the carbs.

You need to do a link and sync. You will need a factory manual for the specific detail required. What year is the model number?

Sounds like you have what you need. Check out Joe Reeves timing procedure without the motor running, it's pretty slick and I can tell you it's bang on accurate.

ok so i have never adjusted the timing on this motor. on a car you rotate the distributor to adjust the timing. How do a advance or retard on this motor?

Also per Joe Reeves timing prcedure:"Rig a spark tester and have the gap set to 7/16". Hook up the timing light to the #1 plug wire. Crank the engine over and set the spark advance to 4? less than what the engine calls for."

do you rig that spark tester to ANY plug wire or the #1 or?

Sorry, I did mine 3 years ago and I just dont recall all of the specific steps. I saw that your post was getting old and buried so I thought I would at least resurrect it for you. It's a simple question that someone should be able to answer.

Spark tester on cyl #1. After all, you are timing the engine, and that is done on cyl #1.
