EVIN. 4 hp-good engine?

I'm looking for a small "kicker" in the 4-6hp range. One currently advertised locally is a 1988 4 hp Evinrude. Also a 1972 6 hp. Are these good engines? I have heard that some small 2cyl. Ev/Johnsons were made in Europe and are excellent, but don't know if this is true and which years and hp this applies to. Any other thoughts re these or other brand small motors would be helpful.

Hi, Dave. The little OMC twins, 3 to 8hp, are wonderful engines. They are smooth and relatively quiet. They must have sold a bazillion of them and most are still in service.<br /><br />Red sky at night.. .<br />JB

Hi Dave seadrive,<br />I run a 4hp Johnson 1974 model. It's been a good motor on the back of my boat backing up the 75hp main. I was given it free as a bomb 5 years ago and after a few minutes (and I mean a few minutes) with it in my workshop I had it running well. Since then it hasn;t let me down. It has replaced my trusty old Seagull 4hp well.<br />Ross

Looked at "1988 evin. 4 hp." Looks much older to me. Model no. is 4506A. Serial no. is E0005676. Can anyone help me with what this really is? Thanks.

The 4506 is a 1975 model.

Hello all<br />I have just got a 3 hp Johnson for 35 usd<br />model JH 19M<br />Serial no. B111683<br /><br />It seems as if it is from 1964, but what stands the M for in the model.<br />Is it because it is build in Belgium Europe ?

Trent: Thanks. I think i'm going to pass on thus particular engine since it looks pretty rough and price is high. Have a better idea of what to look for now. Dave.
