Re: evil lakers

These sweet little fishies are really very simple to catch.
The way it seems to work for me is by using live bait.Either trolling or still fishing.
The favorite bait is any type of fresh water shad, but if you cannot get that, pike minnows will do fine.
You can use lead line or a down rigger.Just set the slip/clip really loose so the first pull will release the line.
Lake trout hit their bait from the side and swim a few feet away from their small school. Then they turn the bait and swallow it.This means that you have to let them do the setting of the hook all by themselves and give them a few feet of line to do so..If you are in too much of a hurry, they will turn evil.
My rigs usually have 2 hooks.(wide shanks). One to tow the bait and another one to ride along about midway on the back of the bait fish.
My trolling speed is about 1.5/1.6 mph.At that speed 9 colors of lead line will get you about 85 foot down.If you fish over a hundred feet down,do not hesitate to use 13 or 14 colors( 1 color is 30 feet).
When you still fish, make sure to bump your sinker or lure on the bottom every so often. That way you will create the little dust clouds that seem to be feeding bait fish.
If you see the trout at fifty feet on your fish finder, while you are set up for 90 feet, just speed up to 2.5 mph and the bait will come up to about 50 feet.
If they appear at 120 or a 140 feet, again while you are hunting at 90 feet, just stop the engine and the bait will flutter down right on top of them.
That is why I like lead lining a lot,it gives you a lot of flexibility.
Good luck!!

Re: evil lakers

thanks for the info,me im a downrigger type guy .speed idea is good to know though ,i suppose if i put the trolling plate down id get to that slow though.guys are telling me the buggers are down about 60 odd feet right now and as you know superior can get down right deep.proably though id say id be in about 100 to 220 feet of water.the only good point is if those guys dont bite maybe a coho or king salmon may decide to hammer the bait.
