My son caught a mudpuppy the other day.. It was the strangest thing I ever saw. It kind of looks like a cross between a catfish and an eel, but has arms and legs.

At first we thought it was an exotic species, but then found out it is just a common aquatic salamander..

When I was a kid I would help clean the reservoir that supplied the water to about a dozen houses in our town and when it was drained we could catch mud puppies by hand in the muddy stream.

That's a waterdog, the best bait ever for bass.

But we don't have tiger salamanders in NY.(I don't think) Mud puppies spend their entire life under water because they breath through gills.I did a search and the tiger salamander larvae is also called a mud puppy so are they one in the same?,who knows.

http://www.earlham.edu/~lanest/mudpuppy.htm

MY, I see several different kinds of salamanders but I don't think we have tiger salamanders. Every once in a while I will see a large black one with yellow or orange spots.
