Down the road from me is a boat with 2 outboards. They look to me to be evenrudes from the 60,s or 70's fairly small in size/HP. They have a section in the leg with identical bolt pattern top and bottom and it looks like a guy could remove the section and bolt it together getting a short shaft case. The question is, are the shafts sectional or would I have to source drive shaft and shift shaft?
I'd like to mount one of these on a small aluminum boat I have access to.
I know this is VERY minimal info I'm giving you, so Im really just looking for general knowledge pertaining to evenrudes. Dont reply If you need more info. Ill try to get a pic tomorrow.

You would need to remove the extension for sure. I know 9.9's so I'll give you that as an example.

The driveshaft, shift rod and water tube are shorter so yes there are some parts that require a swap out.

On the older 60's ones that I know. Yes, the leg section just screws in and out. The shifter had an extra section on it that can be removed. The water tube needs to be 5" shorter, but this is easy as it's a common part with other engines, but you will need a 5" shorter driveshaft from a donor engine. If you know a good metal shop, they can usually cut out 5" and weld it back together and balance it for not too much... Or search used ad's for a parts engine. If you can get the model # off the transom clamp we could find a lot more out for you.

Re: Evenrude? long to short shaft.

You need a shorter drive shaft. And a short shift rod coupler if the extension was an add-on to an original short shaft motor. Early factory long shafts had a long lower shift rod and a standard coupler, so you would need a short lower shift rod if that were the case. If it isn't obvious from the appearance of the motor that it is an add-on extension kit, it is impossible to tell until you tear into it. Also, you will need to shorten the water tube(s). Add-ons had an extension onto the short water tube(s). The extension will just twist off. Also, there is a long bolt at the rear of the leg which holds the L/U on - you will have to replace that with a shorter bolt.

Thank you for the quick replies, I,ll be asking my neighbor about this boat soon. It hasnt moved in the three years I've lived in the area. If I'm lucky I could buck the trailer shorter for to smaller boat too.

I think a lower unit from a short shaft of the same motor will solve your problem. These motors are the same except for the extention.

The right one looks like a 1970 18 or 25hp.

Are the 2 engines actually hooked up? Including steering? And dual controls? I've always wanted to do that!

Yes, I only want the engines. The boat is a POS and If they think they are going to make it sea worthy again, they are in for a LOT of work.

Yes, they are both hooked up. One control unit.
