This year the bulb in the fuel line does not get firm while pumping it, yet the engine will start. After running for 3-5 minutes it stalls. The bulb is soft and requires a lot of squeezing then with the choke engaged, it will restart. I suspect the fuel pump......anyone help? ****

It may be your carbutetor float needle valve sticking and not letting the bowl fill back up with gas. Try rapping the bowl with a screwdriver handle. Sometimes this frees the needle up. It may indicate the need for a carb rebuild.

Thanks, Admiral.....that's a sensible answer from the fiord country....over and back, 10,000 miles in ten minutes! I rather suspected that would be the solution and you confirmed it. A 3/4 century-old sailor appreciates your answer.

My pleasure SAIL4EVER.
How old is is your engine? 20 years or so? You could also check your carb while you are at it. Maybe a carb kit too. Sometimes you have to trust your engine, even on a sailboat.
Better safe...

THE ENGINE IS A 1980 AND HAD BEEN USED FOR A TROLLING MOTOR BY A FISHERMAN. I BOUGHT IT LAST YEAR FOR A 22FT SAILBOAT AND NEED IT TO GET OUT OF MY SLIP, DOWN THE CHANNEL INTO THE LAKE. IT WORKED LIKE A CHAMP LAST YEAR, BUT WOULDN'T START THIS YEAR. WE HAVE FOUR GUYS IN A PARTNERSHIP SO SOME ONE TURNED OFF THE FUEL LAST YEAR AND FUNNY HOW THAT AFFECTED STARTING THIS SPRING! SO I TOOK OFF THE FUEL PUMP TO INSPECT THE DIAPHRAM BEFORE I CHECKED THE FUEL SHUTOFF VALVE. MAYBE THAT AFFECTED THE PUMP'S EFFICIECY. ALSO THE BULB IN THE FUEL LINE WILL NOT PUMP UP FIRM. WHAT IS THAT ALL ABOUT? SORRY ABOUT REFERING TO FIORDS IN SWEDEN....I KNOW BETTER, BUT WAS SO EXCITED TO GET SUCH A PROMPT ANSWER I DID NOT LOOK CAREFULLY AT THE NAME. WE SPENT A GREAT DAY IN STOCKHOLM IN 2000 AND ESPECIALLY ENJOYED EATING AT THE CANAL'S EDGE.

Is that both a built in fuel tank and a remote fuel tank?
Some one turned off the fuel shut off valve before winter. Did you guys drain the carb at the same time? Did you winterize it? I'm asking because I think your old fuel might have gummed up the carb. In that case you have to clean it. If the float valve is stuck open the primer bulb won't get firm because you keep pumping fuel through the fuel pump, carb and to the crankcase. Probably stuck slightly open.

So the diaphram was good, no crack or a small hole in it?

Maybe you just can get away with some tapping on the float bowl.
Exploded view of your carb

I still think it would be a good idea to get both a fuel pump and a carb kit.

I'm glad you liked your stay in Stockholm. No fiords around here, but we have a beautiful archipelago.
