Just purchased a boat with about a 1990 or later 120 hp evenrude motor. It set for about a year but had stabil in the fuel. Took it out yesterday WOT 4000 rom but if I held in the choke I got 4600 rpm. so i changed the water/fuel filter and took it out today. It ran great for a couple of minutes but then the same thing. It is starving for fuel. What do i need to check next. Fuel pump looks as if it has been replaced.

Sounds like carb rebuild time. Also a model # would help.

Ok I have a 115hp which is the same set up. First look around your engine and check all the fuel lines for kinks. Even a tight bend can cause loss of fuel and make it choke out. After that because it's the easiest, put you head through your access hatch and check the run of the fuel line for any kinks. You also have a filter screen inside you fuel pump. If your look at it it will have a flat head screw in the center of your fuel pump, you can remove it and it will open it up to the screen. Clean it and replace. This is some basic checks before you get into rebuilding carbs but you may still have too. If it sat up for a year you will need to drop your bowl on your carbs and make sure there is no build up also. Off the subject a little you 120 should be maxing out about 5600 rpm not 4600 rpm. Once you get it running without choking out, you would get better performance from it at 5600 rpm. Just my input off the subject...
